Yersin Island is a Red Plague quarantine region, designated after the overflow of the Yersin Point Medical Centre. The island is the largest Zero-Q Zone in the Kingdom.
The island is a rocky outcrop with steep shores on the west side of Ivykeep, just off of Yersin Point. There is limited vegetation on the island, as most wood has been used to construct a sprawling shanty community. A long, narrow footbridge is the only access to the island, the East end of which passes through the medical centre.
In pre-war times the island was rocky and largely undeveloped. Its population grew as it began to house a growing Liquidator community, in the group's early years before the government's crackdown on their activities. Using a primitive Aether Disruptor they succeeded in reducing localized quinta levels to around 0.6-1.4 throughout the island.
As Yersin Point Medical Centre filled up, the Crown began looking for places to send victims. As the island is directly adjacent to the facility and plague victims generally had much higher tolerances for low Aether levels, it was seen as a solution.
After the Liquidators refused to be relocated, the Crown embarked an bloody 2 week assault to raze and recapture the island. The escaping Liquidators, referring to the event as the Great Burn, spread throughout the rest of Ivykeep and rebuilt with a newfound vendetta against the Crown which influenced many of their future endeavors.
After the takeover, plague victims were forcibly relocated to the island by The King's Empirics, an elite force of doctors/mercenaries. Nobody save the Empirics and victims are permitted to enter the island, and nobody except the Empirics are permitted to leave. To date there have been no known escapees.
Once per week, a procession of Empirics cross the access bridge ringing bells. They return an hour later carrying the bodies of plague victims, and they are incinerated in the transfer centre's crematorium. The identities of the dead are not released, or possibly determined at all. Sprouts are not recovered.
